Worthington Whittredge

(1820–1910)
Worthington Whittredge's first experience with a paint brush came when he was 17 and went to work as a house painter's assistant. He was an Ohio farm boy, but he left the farm and advanced from house painting to signs and banners. He also tried portaits and daguerreotyping, then turned to landscape painting. When he was 29 he went to Europe where he traveled and studied in various countries for nearly 10 years. On his return to America, he settled in New York. He made several trips to the American West, and also traveled throughout New York state and New England, painting landscapes.
